2nd travellog (end of December 1999)
Hi After Phuket we took a boat to the island of Pee Pee. It is lovely (like you see on the picture). Too bad there are too many buildings. Our next stop was the island of Lanta, our fifth island in a row. Here it is very quiet and peaceful. The people are friendly and prices are moderate. We paid 4 francs a night for our hut. The draft created by all the tears in the walls in our hut took the place of a fan. Bene was bitten by mosquitoes throughout the night because we didn’t have a mosquito net; he is now ahead of Reto in the bite race and gains about 2.72 bites a day.
It is time to check out a new country: Malaysia. We arrived at the border with Swiss Francs 1.50, which wasn’t enough to pay the bus driver since the price goes up after 5 pm. At first we thought we might have a serious problem, but this problem only cost us the rest of our money. Reto had one coin left; enough to take a leak. Good thing if you’ve got the finances under control!
Our first destination in Malaysia was Georgetown, or Penang. We didn’t like this city much, so we decided to get some fresh air in the mountains (Cameron Highlands). It was cooler there, 15 degrees but we experienced our first shower with warm water on our trip! The next stop was Kuala Lumpur, a mixture of mosques and skyscrapers.
Malaysia is more expensive than Thailand, but still relatively cheap. The beer is still expensive and alcohol in general is not easy to get because the people here are Moslems. It took us three hours to find a liquor shop to buy some alcohol for our farewell party!
We wish you a merry Christmas with many gifts and all the best for the year 2000.
